Clontarf is a magnificent castle Hotel and I recommend at least a night there for families traveling with girls.

We used our day at Clontarf to go to Howth, a sea coast village and beautiful area. Aside from seeing some of the traditional sights, we focused on child-centered activities including the Viking Splash Tour, River Liffey tour, Viking-Medieval Interactive museum, High Tea at the Shelbourne Hotel, candy decorating and factory tour, Grafton Street often , and our favorite, the Celtic Music and Dance show.

Our trip was fun and free of the stress that I feel on guided tours. I made advance reservations for the hotels and must-do venues like the Celtic dance show, tea at the Shelbourne, etc. Otherwise, we winged it and the five-year-old loved Dublin! Hotels close to the city centre in Dublin are very expensive.

I chose the Charles Stewart Parnell for 2 reasons. The first was the lower price. I was only in Dublin for one night and wanted to be close to the city centre. It certainly was that. Secondly was the name of the hotel -named after a true hero in Irish history. However there was no other connection to the history or importance of this political hero.

The staff was not overly friendly. The room was the bare minimum in terms of size. It was clean and the bed was comfortable. However noise levels were troubling. Doors had to be slammed to close - not a good feature when you are woken up during the night. Conversations could be heard even at regular levels.

This was a very small - no frills type of room. If you know this when you book there will be no surprises. We enjoyed just about everything about Dublin The only thing that was terrible was our accommodations! Steer clear of the Kildare Street Hotel! No ventilation, walk up only, tiny rooms with no space, windows overlooking roof tops with garbage containers, totally useless staff who could answer no questions, did not even know about the hotel!
